How to build a Major 7 Chord from scratch

The easiest way to understand how to build Major 7 chords is to start from the 6 string barre (barre = bar) chords.

The logic is, whatever your root note is, you find a note that is half a step down and add it to the chord.

Since we are in the key of A, the note we are searching for is G#.

Playing the A Major 7 chord

For this one, put your index finger on the 5th fret of the 6th string. Add your middle finger on the 5th fret of the 2nd string. Your ring finger goes on the 6th fret of the 4th string. Finally, add your pinky to the 6th fret of the 3rd string.

Furthermore, use your first finger to mute the 5th and the 1st string.

As far as your picking hand goes, you can strum all the 6 strings, just make sure to mute the unwanted strings.
